Meet our team: Q&A with Jeff Walters

by Badgley Phelps | Aug 28, 2018

We’re thankful for the group of outstanding financial professionals we get to work with daily at Badgley Phelps. This month, meet another one of them, Wealth Manager Jeff Walters.

Q: Briefly describe your job.
A: My job as a wealth manager begins with putting together an initial financial plan for clients and then updating their plan as things change. We help answer a variety of questions such as, “Will I be able to sustain my lifestyle in retirement?” and “How can I use my wealth wisely to make sure my children and grandchildren have all the opportunities we would like them to have?” I then work closely with our investment research team to implement clients’ financial plans with custom investment strategies tailored to their goals.

Q: What do you like best about your position and/or about working at Badgley Phelps?
A: I really like working with clients who are transitioning into retirement. Over the past 18 years, I’ve helped many people make this transition. It’s an honor to help our clients work through not only the financial questions of retirement but also the non-financial questions surrounding a big life change. I’m still learning from my clients and this also informs our advice for those striving for a future retirement. I also like that this is an employee-owned firm. We have a collaborative group of talented professionals with different areas of specialty (financial planning, equity research, municipal bonds, etc.) all working together for the benefit of our clients.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?
A: Outside of work, I try to maximize the quality time spent with my wife and three children ages 12, 10, and 7. As the kids have gotten older, we have become acutely aware of how fast they are growing up!

Q: Where else besides the Seattle area would you like to live?
A: I don’t think I’ll ever leave the Seattle area—but if I did, my first choice would be Bend, OR.

Q: Do you have a pet? If so, what’s its name?
A: We have a Yellow Lab named Wilson. A few years ago, the children convinced us to add him to the family by writing an essay on the reasons it would be a good idea to get a dog.

Q: What’s been your best moment so far this year?
A: My family spent two weeks in June traveling in our camper to national parks including Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands.

Q: What’s your favorite app?
A: Spotify. I love listening to music, but I was always too cheap to build a collection. Now I have access to an almost endless music collection. I use the app almost every day.

Q: What’s your favorite time of day?
A: Nothing beats 8 pm on a warm summer evening in the Pacific Northwest. The rest of the year, my favorite time of day is first thing in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee.
