Meet our team: Q&A with Andrea Durbin

by Badgley Phelps | Sep 25, 2018

Our amazing team has grown recently, and this month we’re pleased to introduce one of our newer staff members, Wealth Manager and Research Analyst Andrea Durbin.

Q: Briefly describe your job.
A: In my role as a wealth manager, I work with clients to create customized solutions to meet their unique financial goals. This entails taking a holistic view of their financial situation, understanding their values and priorities then creating a plan to meet those objectives. As a research analyst, I am a member of both the research and growth portfolio teams. My responsibilities include researching, selecting and monitoring securities held in our client’s portfolios.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about your position and/or about working at Badgley Phelps?
A: One of the many reasons I like working at Badgley Phelps is the culture. It is truly one of the most collaborative and supportive environments I have worked in. Everyone shares the same goal of working together as a team to meet and exceed our clients’ expectations. In my experience in the financial services industry, collaborative cultures can often be hard to come by.

Q: Where else besides the Seattle area would you like to live?
A: I have always dreamed of living in France. I love the Bordeaux region and drinking red wine, skiing the alps in Chamonix and strolling the streets of Paris people watching.

Q: What’s the last book you read?
A: I continually re-read the book “Listening—The Forgotten Skill” by Madelyn Burley-Allen. It continues to serve me well, professionally, socially and personally. For an extroverted person like myself, listening is a skill that is always a work in progress!

Q: What’s a little-known fact about you?
A: I had the opportunity to meet Jimmy Carter in 2002 and spent over an hour discussing his life and politics. This was exciting for me as I told him he was the first president I had voted for! Granted I was in 1st grade and it was our school’s presidential election. He laughed.

Q: Do you have a pet? If so, what’s its name?
A: A pet? We have a small zoo. We have two pugs named Jacques and Chloe, Blanche the guinea pig and two fish, Sklyar and Mason.

Q: What’s been your best moment so far this year?
A: Watching my two daughters, ages 16 and 13, perform at their Spring Dance Recital and seeing their passion and artistic abilities come through in each of their performances.

Q: What’s your favorite cause?
A: I have been involved with the organization Forefront Suicide Prevention, a program through the University of Washington, for three years. Forefront is focused on reducing suicide by empowering individuals and communities to take sustainable action, championing systemic change and restoring hope. Specifically, I have worked with University Prep as a parent educator in training other parents and our community in suicide prevention and intervention.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?
A: My passion is traveling the world and learning about history and other cultures. I have traveled to 32 countries on four continents. My goal is to someday say I have traveled to all seven continents.

Q: What’s your favorite time of day?
A: Coming into the office with my coffee, reading the financial news on my Bloomberg terminal and watching the stock market open on my screen flashing green and red. I am addicted!
