Meet our team: Q&A with Mitzi Carletti

by Badgley Phelps | Feb 08, 2019

This month, meet Wealth Manager and Research Analyst Mitzi Carletti, who wants to meet Elizabeth Bennet and will likely beat you at Ping-Pong.

Q: Will you please briefly describe your job?
My job is to help individuals and nonprofits meet their unique financial goals. I am also a member of our research team, so a good part of my day is spent researching, selecting and monitoring stocks for our clients.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about working at Badgley Phelps?
My favorite part of working here is my clients. I am honored to have their trust and confidence.

Q: Who is one of your role models and why?
My role model is Madelyn Smith. She was my manager and mentor, early in my career, at the Frank Russell Company. Madelyn was truly a champion for her colleagues and had the ability to inspire people with just a few but empowering words. Madelyn was well respected in our industry because she earned it by speaking up and always doing the right thing.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not working?
When I’m not in the office, I like to be outside. I will try almost any sport at least once. Most weekends you can find me in North Central Washington running, hiking and biking. My family wishes I would say I like to cook, but that wouldn’t be true.

Q: What fictional character would you most like to meet and why?
I would like to meet any of Jane Austen’s protagonists, but if I had to pick only one it would probably be Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth is quick witted, independent and can laugh at herself. Those traits inspire me.

Q: Where else besides the Seattle area would you like to live?
Edinburgh, Scotland. I used to travel there frequently in my prior job and I always came home saying that out of all the places I’ve been, I could live in Edinburgh. Probably because the climate reminds me of the Northwest and there is an amazing castle in the middle of the city that the locals seem not to notice.

Q: What’s the last book you read?
Becoming by Michelle Obama. It is a tribute to the transformative power of education.

Q: What accomplishments are you most proud of?
I’m proud of my two boys and the fact I’ve been married for nearly 40 years, but I’m most proud of being the first generation in my family to go to college. Education literally changed my life.

Q: What motivates you?
Being independent and in control of my own destiny is what motivates me. I want to make life happen, not let life happen to me.

Q: What’s a little-known fact about you?
A little-known fact about me is that I play the cello. Another is that I recently learned I am pretty good at Ping-Pong when I took Julie Roy down at our firm tournament. All those hours in my basement were obviously not misspent youth.

Q: What’s your favorite app?
Waze, because life is too short to spend it in traffic.

Q: What’s your favorite cause?
My favorite cause is education and any organization that helps kids (you might sense a theme here). I support Childhaven, Treehouse and a scholarship program for low income students at a community college.

Q: What’s your favorite time of day?
I have always been a morning person; I love getting up before dawn. One of my favorite things to do when I’m traveling in a new city is go for a run at sunrise. You get to see it from an entirely different perspective.

Q: What advice do you have for others in financial services?
It is not likely going to be “different this time,” maintain your perspective and stay the course. Most importantly, never forget it is your clients’ money.
